I have just finished rereading The Subtle Knife, which I read many years ago, and I had forgotten how good it is.
We again meet Lyra, and she is joined by Will who comes from "our" world. They meet in a world which is alien to both of them, and help each other. In this new world which is very deserted, there are only children and Spectres (who attack adults and turn them into zombies). Most of the action in this world is based in a city called Cittagazze, which is where Lyra and Will first meet. There are also some familiar characters in this story from The Golden Compass - Serafina (the witch), Mrs Coulter and Lee Scoresby.
This story is much more developed, I feel and there is a lot of action. There seems to be less information about Dust, etc as that has all been dealt with in the first book, but it would still be possible to read this one on its own without knowing anything about the first book. The suspense lasts right up to the last page, and leaves you on a cliff hanger, ready for book 3 - The Amber Spyglass, which I will start tomorrow :)
A cracking read - well worth getting, but I would recommend you read the whole series.
