I think a classic is a book than can stand the test of more than one read - I often go back to a book and reread it after a few years. There are certain classics eg Lord of the Rings which I used to read every summer as a kid.
I agree with the comments in the article about Philip Pullman and I feel that his books are really going to take off when the movies are released. I also think that they are more enduring than the Harry Potter series as the article states.
